George Lyman Kittredge's Commonplace Book
George Lyman Kittredge
Harvard University, 1878-1880
Professor of English literature George Lyman Kittredge (Harvard, A.B., 1882) taught at Harvard from 1888 to 1936. A medievalist, he wrote on Chaucer, Shakespeare, grammar, and witchcraft, and edited Anglo-Saxon, Middle English, and Scottish poetry and ballads.
This volume from Kittredge’s undergraduate years at Harvard contains transcribed literary and biblical passages, poetry, and newspaper items, as well as a collection of old English oaths and reading lists. Some items are written in Greek and Latin. The volume includes an index at the front. Marginal notes suggest that Kittredge re-read his notes on one or more later occasions.
