Rinsen Nakazawa's 近代思想十六講 [Kindai shisō jūrokkō] was a bestselling compendium and guide to the thought of sixteen modern thinkers, including Nietzsche, Rousseau, Darwin, Bergson, William James, Rabindranath Tagore, and Romain Rolland. It was originally published in 1915. Shunsuke Tsurumi, who read and annotated this book in August and September of 1938, was using the eighteenth edition, published the same year. The Japanese historian and philosopher Shunsuke Tsurumi (1922-) studied at Harvard, then taught at Kyoto University.
