18. From field notes to film

Richard Frye

Prof. Richard Nelson Frye, (b. 1920), an American expert in Iranian and Central Asian studies, was a Harvard faculty member from 1948 until his retirement as Aga Khan Professor Emeritus of Iranian Studies in 1990. He helped found Harvard's Center for Middle Eastern Studies and launched the first Iranian studies program in North America. His research interests spanned history, art and archaeology, and philology. From the 1940s through the 1970s he traveled extensively in Iran and Afghanistan.

He has donated many of his photographs and films documenting his fieldwork, as well as some of his field notes, to Harvard's Fine Arts Library. This set of Prof. Frye's field notes, accompanied by three and a half hours of film footage titled "Across the Deserts of Iran," documents a research trip he took to Baluchistan, a remote region at the intersection of the borders of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
