André Godard (b. Chaumont, France, 1881; d. Paris, 1965), was a French archeologist, art historian, architect of the French Archeological Delegation in Afghanistan (1922) and later director of the Archeological Services of Iran for Reżā Shah’s government (1928-1953, 1956-1960). His wife Yedda (Reuilly) Godard (b.1889; d.1976) was his longtime collaborator as well as a scholar in her own right.
The contents of these field notebooks were the basis for much of the material published by the Godards. Results of the Godards’ archeological and architectural investigations appeared in, among other journals, Athār-é Īrān: Annales du Service Archéologique de l’Īrān, produced twice a year from 1936-1949. The notebooks also figure in L’Art de l’Iran, written after Godard returned to France in 1960.
The Godard field notebooks are part of the Baroness Marie-Thérèse Ullens de Schooten Archive held at the Fine Arts Library. The Baroness was the Godards’ heir.
